Red yeast rice caused a legal stink back in the late 90's. Merck Inc. markets this drug as
"Lovastatin" which sells for a good price by prescription only. Merck convinced the FDA to remove it from its over the counter status, as it was to be by prescription only. In 1999, the FDA determined that the red yeast rice plant could be grown by anyone and returned it to the open shelves. "Lovastatin" is the first "statin drug" used to lower bad cholesterol. Merck continues to sellred yeast rice, or "Lovasatin," for a much higher price than what you see here.
Oh yea, do not drink grapefruit juice while you take this supplement. It may cause spontaneous muscle cell rupture with that fruit juice. Welcome to the use of "statin" drugs
for lowering LDL cholesterol.
Does it work to lower bad cholesterol? It is the first drug in a class of the most effective cholesterol lowering drugs known. It works exceedingly well. |
