Meridian Naturals™ CoQ10 is obtained naturally by fermentation. A series of
crystallization and evaporation steps follows in order to achieve optimal
purification. This results in the production of CoQ10 with a side chain of 10
isoprenoid units in the trans configuration, the form of CoQ10 that occurs
naturally in the body's cells. We do not use Chinese or synthetic CoQ10 in any
of our products.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), or ubiquinone, is a
naturally-occurring, vitamin-like nutrient found in every cell of the body.
Found in highest concentration in cell mitochondria (where energy is produced),
its primary function is to help with the conversion of food and oxygen into
energy. CoQ10 is also a powerful antioxidant and may help neutralize
damage-causing free radicals. Although CoQ10 is involved in every bodily process
that requires energy, it's believed to be of fundamental importance in cells
with high metabolic demands, such as cardiac cells. The heart, with greater
energy requirements than other organs, contains twice as much CoQ10 as any other
tissue in the body.
Levels of CoQ10 naturally decline with age, which may result in less
efficient organ function because of reduced energy supply. Statin drugs, taken
for high cholesterol, may also deplete the body of CoQ10.
Statin drugs may lower your body's ability to produce CoQ10. This is because
CoQ10 and cholesterol are both derived from the same substance, mevalonate. The
purpose of statins is to inhibit the creation of cholesterol, and by extension,
it suppresses the creation of CoQ10.
Although our bodies have the ability to make CoQ10, as we ingest it from
foods such as codfish, egg yolk, mackerel, salmon, sardines, wheat germ, and
whole grains, certain factors may deplete it: illness; physical, mental, and
emotional activity; all forms of stress; and aging. To get 30 mg of CoQ10, you
need one pound of sardines, two pounds of beef, or two and one half pounds of
peanuts.
