Muscle hardening*: Among other roles, branched-chain amino acids(BCAA) are used as building blocks in the synthesis of muscle proteins.* Muscle protein synthesis is an essential requirement for the muscle hypertrophy (increase in muscle size) associated with resistance exercise (bodybuilding training). Without muscle protein synthesis, in other words, there will not be an increase in muscle size. Also, many bodybuilding supplements and processed foods are high in sodium. Sodium can cause water to move out of muscle cells and into the inter-cellular space (i.e. the space between cells). When this occurs, your muscles may appear 'smooth' or 'bloated' in appearance (loss of muscle definition and hardness). In addition, the movement of water out of the muscle cells actually promotes catabolism and atrophy - precisely the opposite of what bodybuilding is all about
